Response to the Claim that Religion Is the Opium of the Peoples
Calling religion 'the opium of the peoples' is a narrow diagnosis that grew out of watching distorted religious experiences in feudal Europe, where some clergy used their influence to numb people into accepting injustice. That projection does not apply scientifically or historically to Islam. Islam was never a tool for dulling minds or legitimizing tyranny; it came as a revolution against injustice and ignorance.
Opium clouds the mind and leads to laziness and dependence, while Islam makes the intellect the basis of moral responsibility, commands work and action, and urges confronting and resisting injustice.
How Islam Opposes Numbing and Laziness
Islam opposes the idea of numbing through clear legal and practical principles that changed the course of history:
Revolution against injustice and slavery
Islam came to free people from the servitude of other people to the worship of the Lord of people. That is the opposite of numbing. Allah says:
"Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful." (Al-A'raaf 7:157)
Islam commands forbidding wrong and confronting oppressors. In an authentic hadith:
"The best jihad is a word of justice before a tyrannical ruler" (Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi)
Encouraging knowledge and using the mind
Opium disables thought, while the first ayah revealed in Islam is:
"Recite in the name of your Lord who created -" (Al-Alaq 96:1)
The Quran condemns blind following and ignorance, and calls for reflection in many ayahs, such as:

The rational proof for the Creator and His oneness
An ordered universe cannot arise from nothing or from random chance. Allah says:
"Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?" (At-Tur 52:35)
Scientific and unseen miracles in the Quran
The Quran contains scientific, astronomical, and embryological facts unknown at the time of revelation that align with modern science, such as the stages of embryonic development:
"Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators." (Al-Muminoon 23:14)
It also foretold future unseen events that occurred as described, such as the Romans defeating the Persians within a few years:
"The Byzantines have been defeated. In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. Within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice" (Ar-Room 30:2-4)
Preservation of the legislative source
The Quran is the only book transmitted by unbroken oral and written mass transmission, generation after generation, with the same wording and letters, without change or corruption, for more than fourteen hundred years, confirming Allah's words:
"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian." (Al-Hijr 15:9)

History and lived reality show that Islam moves peoples; it does not sedate them:
A comprehensive scientific civilization
When Muslims held to their religion, they did not withdraw into monasteries. They built a civilization that led the world in medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and chemistry, and the universities of Cordoba and Baghdad were beacons for the whole world.
Freeing societies from class hierarchy
Islam abolished racial and class discrimination and made competence and piety the standard. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in the Farewell Sermon:
"O people, your Lord is one and your father is one. There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a red person over a black person, nor of a black person over a red person, except by piety" (Ahmad)
